Why: Over 40 years ago, Los Angeles County Public Defender, Sherry Jason, encountered a 13-year-old piano prodigy who was about to be transported to jail for murder. It so impacted Ms. Jason and her attorney husband, Bob that they began to seek ways to reach at-risk children to intervene and break the cycle of abuse, poverty and violence that devastates lives. The result: City Hearts: Kids Say Yes to the Arts – a unique program providing Visual and Performing Arts education, training and experiences, at no cost, to the underserved children in the most impoverished areas of Southern California.
Fresh Focus: A New Shot at Life, City Hearts’ Photography Program provides the highest quality Photography instruction at no cost to the schools or children where classes are held.
“We teach them to evaluate their lives and community with a critical eye so that they may, in turn, educate others about their world and tell their ‘story behind the shot’,” Co-Founder Sherry Jason explains.
